Bitch, Bastard, Cow, Loser

The aftermath of the speed dating incident (note: it’s been upgraded from an event to an incident to carry more negative weight) is that I’ve started paying more attention to girl-girl-boy and boy-boy-girl conversations, that is to say conversations between girls about boys and vice versa. I’ll come right out and admit that my findings are probably inaccurate being based mainly on conversations at the gym and around an art college.

Whenever a group of girls get together to discuss the opposite sex, unattractive men are always dismissed as ‘losers’.  I’ve certainly been guilty of doing this. No one ever asks what a loser actually is. Are they prone to losing things like their wallet or are we talking about bigger picture stuff like losing the game of life? And if there is a loser, then somewhere there must be a man who is a ‘winner’. And what does that mean exactly?

On the topic of girls, you never hear any guys saying, ‘Yeah, she’s a bit of a loser.’ That’s because there’s never any pressure for a female to be a ‘winner’. Guys are more likely to complain about girls being ‘bitches’ or ‘cows’ (which James assures me is just a whining bitch who may also be a bit overweight. He also wants it known that he doesn’t go around insulting women).

Then there’s ‘the bastard’ anomaly. Is this an insult or not? Whenever girls accuse guys of being bastards, it’s usually followed by an arched eyebrow or a little smile. As if they want to say in the same breath, ‘He’s a bastard…but I would totally sleep with him.’
